How the Scoring Works

The audit readiness score is built around the same documentation standards described in IRS Publication 527 and the Tax Court cases most commonly cited in REP audits.

Activity Description Quality

25 pts

Generic descriptions like "property work" score near zero. IRS-specific language tied to a qualifying category and a property address scores full points.

Property Attribution

20 pts

Every hour entry must be traceable to a specific property. Unattributed hours are indefensible in an exam.

Contemporaneous Patterns

20 pts

Hours logged in bulk on a single day signal retroactive entry — a primary red flag for IRS examiners. Daily or near-daily entries score highest.

Category Coverage

15 pts

The IRS recognizes 14 qualifying activity types. Logs covering only 2–3 categories suggest incomplete documentation.

Monthly Consistency

10 pts

Unexplained gaps (months with zero hours) create credibility questions, especially if you are claiming full-year REP status.

Supporting References

10 pts

Entries cross-referenced to calendar events, emails, or invoices significantly strengthen defensibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

What file formats does the audit scan accept?
The scan accepts .xlsx, .xls, and .csv files up to 2 MB. These cover the most common spreadsheet formats used for manual REP hour tracking.
Is my spreadsheet data sent to a server?
In the current demo version, your file is processed entirely in your browser — nothing is uploaded to our servers. When full analysis launches, files will be transmitted over TLS, analyzed, and immediately deleted.
What does the audit readiness score measure?
The score (0–100) evaluates: activity description quality and IRS specificity, property attribution completeness, consistency of contemporaneous entry patterns, coverage of all 14 qualifying activity categories, monthly documentation continuity, and absence of non-qualifying activities.
What score do I need to be considered audit-ready?
A score of 80 or above (grade B or better) indicates documentation that would withstand IRS scrutiny. Scores below 60 carry significant exam risk and should be addressed before filing.
My log looks fine to me. Why would I get a low score?
Common hidden issues include: vague descriptions ("property work" vs. "coordinated HVAC repair for 123 Main St"), missing property attribution on individual entries, large batches entered on a single day (suggesting retroactive logging), and absence of supporting documentation references. These are the exact patterns IRS examiners are trained to flag.
Can this replace a CPA review?
No. This tool helps you identify surface-level documentation weaknesses before presenting your logs to a CPA or in an audit. Always consult a qualified tax professional for advice specific to your situation.
How is REPSShield different from this free scan?
REPSShield tracks your hours automatically by syncing your calendar — eliminating retroactive logging entirely. It generates IRS-compliant audit packages on demand, with every entry timestamped and corroborated by calendar data. The audit scan tells you what is wrong with your current logs; REPSShield prevents those problems from occurring.
